Icône "Architecte"
PAULUSSEN, 1856–1857
H. VAN LEUVEN, 1901–1913

This building complex has since 1979 been home to the Brussels City Archives, which were originally stored at the Town Hall and the Midi Palace covered market.  Earlier it housed the wholesale textile business of Jules Waucquez and Co.  Emblematic of 19th-century commercial architecture, the spaces are vast and there are 33 kilometres of wooden shelving which once held rolls of different fabrics, ribbons and buttons, and now perfectly align thousands of numbered boxes.  Visiting the BCA (as it’s called in archival jargon) is like diving into neighborhood history, trades, customs and past professional practice, and discovering firsthand where Brussels keeps its administrative and urban planning memory.
