Who is it for?
This tour is specifically aimed at people on the autism spectrum. Supporters are also welcome. The tours are open to people aged 16 and over.

What?
Since 1948, the Van der Noot d’Assche Palace has been home to the Council of State. It was built between 1856 and 1858 for Theodore van der Noot, the Marquis d’Assche, a member of one of Belgium’s most powerful families. It was Alphonse Balat, who would later become King Leopold II’s architect, who commissioned the construction of this impressive city palace, reminiscent of Italian Renaissance palaces. Crown Prince Albert and his wife Elisabeth resided in this palace between 1901 and 1909. Subsequently, the palace served as the residence for American ambassadors.
During the tour, the focus is on the architectural grandeur of the palace and the daily life of its occupants. Not to be missed: the former ballroom with its chandelier, mouldings and period mirrors; the former dining room adorned with two tapestries from Mechelen; the First President’s office with its ceiling paintings by Charles Chaplin, and Prince Albert’s library, in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style.

How is the tour adapted for people with autism?
The tour takes place at a very quiet time of day. There will be another group of visitors in the building, but visitor flow will be organised in such a way that no disruptive interaction occurs with other groups. There will be no audio or video recordings to be heard or seen during the tour. The tour is led by a qualified guide with experience in supporting people with autism. No later than one week before the tour begins, participants will also receive a detailed script to help them prepare for the tour at their own pace.
