F. PAUWELS, 1857

A spacious mansion with outbuildings, the former Hôtel du Chastel de la Howarderie is now home to Maison Costermans, a member of the Royal Chamber of Antique Dealers. Built around 1785 in the classical style, the main building was extended in 1857 according to plans by the architect Félix Pauwels. The conversion into a ground-floor retail space, crowned by a balcony running the full length of the façade, took place in 1954 to plans by the architect Léon Emmanuel Govaerts. The Louis XVI-style interior is particularly well preserved and features a remarkable staircase with stucco decoration and statues. Upstairs, the adjoining salons and bedrooms retain their panelling, fireplaces and ceilings and, as befits an antique dealer’s shop, are brimming with fine antiques, paintings, furniture and art objects of all kinds.
