The Koningswijk was truly at the center of the events that led to Belgium’s independence: from the short-lived Republic of the United Belgian States in 1790 to the swearing-in of Leopold I, which took place on July 21, 1831, at Koningsplein.

The Palace of the Nation, the Palace of the Academies—built for the Prince of Orange—the Théâtre du Parc, and the magnificent facades of Koningsstraat and Hertogstraat tell the story of clashing ideas and political struggle.

The BELvue and the Royal Park witnessed the bloody battles of September 1830. A history full of turmoil and anger that contrasts with the pursuit of elegance and balance in the neoclassical surroundings.
