G. THOELEN, 1905

An exceptional example of bourgeois and notarial life in the early 20th century, the Hap House was built in 1859 on behalf of François-Louis Hap. Set within a family estate of around three hectares, it was extended and remodelled in 1905 by the architect G. Thoelen at the request of Félix Hap, mayor of Etterbeek. In contrast to the very understated neoclassical façade, the interior retains a rich décor which has recently undergone meticulous restoration. The private quarters comprise a Louis XVI-style drawing room, a dining room decorated with rustic-inspired paintings on mounted canvas, and an Art Nouveau-inspired veranda. As for the former notary’s office, it features a period counter and a desk in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, accented with Art Nouveau and Oriental elements.
